Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

In this essay we study football supporter's thoughts and views on their lives as supporters. We aim to find out what it is that is so fascinating with football and how big a part the spirit of the community and intellectual fellowship among the supporters is. It has also been our intent to find answers to how much being a supporter gives meaning to life to the individual. By performing six interviews with supporters to AIK and Hammarby we learn more about life as a football supporter. Subjects as the spirit of the community, fascination with football, supporter as a lifestyle and the violence have brought up a lot of interesting thoughts.

In this study the empirical material has been collected and the interviews have been studied by using phenomenology and hermeneutics. This essay shows that the spirit of the community is a significant part in the life of a supporter. Football giving meaning to life to an individual in comparison with religion giving meaning to life has been recognized, which led to interesting angles of approach, like for instance the informants' views on violence. The informants spend a lot of time and dedication to football and it can therefore be considered a lifestyle.
