Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

People with multiple disabilities have great difficulties with communication and are directly dependent on their closest surroundings to be able to satisfy their communicative needs. Knowledge about communication and augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) in personal care assistants are therefore of great importance. The purpose of this study was to evaluate a communication course according to the eight-step model directed to personal care assistants of an adult with multiple disabilities. Five personal care assistants that took the course participated in this study. By filming the participants before, after and three months after the course, material was collected that was analyzed both qualitatively with conversation analysis and quantitatively with the analysis instrument KOMMUNIKATIV, to see whether their communicative behaviour was changed after taking the course. The participants also filled out a survey whether they themselves thought that their communicative behaviour had changed after taking the course. A measurable difference in the personal care assistants’ communicative behaviour was seen in the KOMMUNIKATIV analysis after taking the course compared to before; this was also seen in the conversation analysis. Also the participants thought that their communicative behaviour had changed somewhat but that their attitude towards communication had not changed significantly. The results indicates that the communication course according to the eight-step model had a positive effect on the personal care assistants’ communicative behaviour, but more research is necessary to document and describe the implications that this changed behaviour has on the interaction between personal care assistants and people with multiple disabilities.
