Abstract [en]

From the seventeenth to the eighteenth century, non-belligerent ideologies in Sweden underwent a radical revolution of values. Militarization of the state during the age of imperial greatness had profoundly influenced institutional structures and the climate of public debate. This was even true after the demise of Sweden as a Continental military power. During the eighteenth century, however, non-belligerent worldviews gained increasing foothold in Sweden. Discourse in this area had commenced as a religious debate about the justification of war, but continued in the new century as a pragmatic question of interest, until it assumed a moral dimension with wider repercussions.
