Nurses' experiences of caring for adult patients in the palliative phase - A literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Palliative care is based on an approach that aims to improve the quality of life for both patients and their families facing problems associated with life-threatening illnesses. The situation at the end of life can take many different forms, as can the palliative care. Aim: The aim of this literature study was to describe nurses' experiences of caring for adult patients in the palliative phase. Methods: This literature study was made using structured search and descriptive design, with article searches in the CINAHL, PubMed and PsycINFO databases. Ten articles, of which nine were qualitative and one was quantitative, corresponding to the purpose of the study were selected and analyzed. Results: Nurses who worked with palliative care stated that they experienced both positive and negative emotions at work. Support and opportunity for debriefing was considered important for some nurses. Many experienced difficulties in caring for palliative patients, while simultaneously caring for curative patients. Conclusions: The results of the study revealed that nurses have different and individual experiences of caring for palliative patients. It also revealed that they had a professional perspective and ambition to work person-centered, but was hampered by organizational conditions, such as lack of resources.
