A survey regarding oral health care interventions for frail elderly persons (English)
Abstract [sv]

Fler människor lever allt längre idag än tidigare vilket ökar andelen sköra äldre i befolkningen.

Abstract [en]

More people are living longer than before, which increases the proportion of frail elderly people in the population. Frail elderly people have reduced autonomy and often have large nursing needs. It has been shown that many frail elderly people have impaired oral health and increased dental needs, which may lead to great physical and mental suffering. The reformed dental care support introduced in Sweden in the year of 1999 which meant outreach to capture the elderly, sick and disabled people in need of dental care. There is evidence that suggests that this reform has not reached out to the extent it was intended, and that health professionals have inadequate knowledge in the field of oral health. The purpose of this study was to identify the interventions made regarding oral health for frail elderly persons. The method was systematic literature study with descriptive design. The study includes 15 articles of quantitative method. Results: The intervention for oral health in frail elderly identified was: implementation of guidelines, training/education of personnel, toothpaste trials, actions performed by the dental hygienist/dentist, and custom actions for people with dementia.

Keywords: frail elderly, dementia, oral health, preventive dentistry.
