“The horse became a bridge, you reach the innermost” : - a qualitative study of the motivation to work with Equine Assisted Activities/Therapy. (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to investigate the motives in which a social worker chooses to include horses as a part of its work. To do so, we interviews six persons that are active within the area of Equine Assisted Activities/therapy (EAA/T). We wanted to understand why you choose to include a horse in an already complex field. The following questions were set as guide lines for the thesis: Which elements are active when deciding to working with horses? Which knowledge and experiences effect the option to include EEA/T in the work? Do earlier experiences affect the decision to work with EAA/T? Our empirical data collected using semi-structured interview have been analyzed using earlier research within the area, but also through perspective that explain the complexity within the area of social work, knowledge in different forms but also evidence-based internship. A theory about, “action competence” by Pär Nygren is also included to be used in the analysis of the material. The result of the thesis is that our respondents are using EAA/T out of both personal and professional experiences, a result that are shown in earlier research as well. All our respondents were interested in horses before they decided to work with EAA/T which also is presented in earlier research. The thesis provided us with information that our respondent is using experience-based knowledge as well as the knowledge regarding EAA/T must expand, due to lack of knowledge of its effects. The majority of our respondent believes that they are working based on evidence collected from surrounding areas. The “action competence” analysis shows that our respondents have multiple professional competences.
