Abstract [sv]

Detta arbete handlade om att undersöka de olika fördelar och nackdelar som kan finnas med att installera frekvensstyrning av sjövattenpumparna på fartyget m/s Finnfellow.

Arbetet hade som huvudsyfte att ge den tekniska chefen ombord på fartyget ett underlag för att kunna besluta om en installation av frekvensstyrning var lämplig att genomföra. Det undersöktes mest hur systemen ombord fungerade och hur en frekvensstyrning skulle påverka sjövattensystemet.

Resultatet blev att det skulle sparas in ca 122MWh/år i elenergi. Detta gör att man sparar in installationskostnaderna för frekvensstyrningen på under 2 år med ungefärliga bränslekostnader i dagens läge, det ger också en miljöfördel genom att fartyget förbrukar ca 26 ton tjockolja mindre per år.

Slutsatsen blev att det skulle vara mycket förmånligt att installera en frekvensstyrning ombord på detta fartyg med gällande system. Det fanns vissa nackdelar t.ex. installationskostnaderna och eventuella EMC-problem, men fördelarna bedöms överväga dessa.

Abstract [en]

This diploma thesis was made for working out the pro and cons of installing a variable-frequency drive for the sea-water pumps on the ship m/s Finnfellow. The main object of the work was to give the chief engineer of the ship a foundation on which he could decide if it is worth installing this or not.

The main investigation in the work was to find out how the variable-frequency drive would affect the sea-water system.

The result of the work was that a considerable amount of electrical energy could be saved yearly (122MWh). This would mean that the installation cost could be repaid in fewer than 2 years with the current fuel prices, also an environmental advantage was discovered because the ship would consume 26 tons of fuel oil less each year.

The conclusion of the work is that it would be very beneficial to have a variable-frequency drive onboard.
