Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Working in projects is considered a one-time task used in order to achieve one or more objectives. This work has become more common over time and used by various organizations and companies to achieve maximum profits. Although group work has become more common, problems still may arise during the execution of the project work. One of the most common barriers confronted when conducting project work is when companies assign multi-projects, which then leads to prioritizing tasks to accomplish the objective. Most companies handle this by creating a project portfolio and diversifying resources. Tieto is an established consultancy that has developed its own project management model, Practical Project Management (PPS). The model is used sold and procured by several companies as a basis for controlling and managing their projects. The study is focused on how companies using PPS manage their project portfolio. Within portfolio management’s most challenging parts is how to prioritize tasks and steps. To facilitate this priority it is best to conduct a risk versus return ratio or a risk versus reward ratio. This analysis includes all the benefits and risks a project may confront, they are used as a basis for prioritization. A case study was made on four different organizations to analyze how they work with their portfolio management, as well as on how they perform their benefits and risk analysis. (The four organizations are not divulged but an explanation of their respective industries are due to confidentiality terms). This information is also studied with what theory has to say about portfolio management. The results of this study are that portfolio management is difficult because the problem lies in the prioritization. According to respondents, the difficulty in prioritizing lies mainly in the fact that feasibility studies, the benefit and risk analysis were not performed correctly.
