History Education and Digital Technology : How history teachers work with digital technology, historical consciousness and historical empathy in teaching 2011. (English)
Abstract [en]

This essay takes its starting point in the research on digital technology and theories on learning to apply the research on history teaching. The theories on learning from Illeris and Selander are used to find out how the digital technology should be used in upper secondary school, since there is no extensive research on how the new technology should be used in upper secondary school. From that point the essay’s primary goal is to investigate how teachers use digital technology, if they choose a particular study field while working with the technology. Furthermore it investigates whether or not the technology is an appropriate mode of operation when developing abilities such as historical consciousness and historical empathy. This is made by reviewing 100 lesson plans on which are categorized within the time period they teach, to which extent they use technology and if they develop historical consciousness and empathy. Two of these lesson plans are also reviewed on a closer extent to investigate how they work with technology and historical consciousness and empathy. Furthermore five interviews have been made with working teachers around Sweden to investigate how they work with digital technology in particular and also with historical consciousness and historical empathy. There are four results of this essay, that there is a tendency in the scope of the survey to use digital technology when teaching. This is made by using varied modes of teaching and varied types of technology. Furthermore the essay shows that when using digital technology, it is preferred to use group projects as a work method. While using a more advanced approach to the technology teachers tend to favor working with modern history. The last result of the essay is that digital technology is a good work method when the teacher want’s to develop historical empathy and historical consciousness.
