Probabilistic Discovery of the Kelvin-Helmholtz Instability in the near Earth Environment

Abstract [en]

This thesis presents a classification scheme for the Kelvin- Helmholtz (KH) instability as it appears at the Terrestrial magnetospheric boundary through the use of magnetic field measurements obtained from the Geotail spacecraft, Minimum Variance Analysis and Hidden Markov Models. Such a classification scheme is useful for data exploration and comparison tasks. This thesis will show that satisfying classification performance can be achieved in spite of limited training data. Further, Geotail data from 2004 through 2009 is classified and while resulting in a large number of false positives the results show evidence of typical Kelvin- Helmholtz signatures.
