Title: A study about needs, goals and motivational factors

Background and problem Motivation is a large subject and in my investigation on the matter I found that needs, goals, intrinsic and extrinsic motivational factors frequently occurred. By that I got interested in research if any of these four key terms was more central for an individual’s motivation within a working team or if all four was as equally central.

Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to investigate which motivational factors that is important to an individual’s motivation. I will do this by investigate the terms needs, goals, intrinsic and extrinsic motivational factors. I want to investigate this by interviewing a number of employees within a working team, including a manager.  My hope is that my thesis will interest managers in working teams, future managers and co-workers that want to learn more about motivation.

Problem statement: What factors are important to individual motivation in a working team?

 

 

Methodology: I conducted a qualitative study where I gathered data from five persons. The interviews were made in each respondent’s office and took about an hour per person.

 

 

Conclusions: The study shows that all of the four factors were central to motivation, but that some sub factors were more important to this specific working team. Furthermore the study showed that the intrinsic motivational factors were somewhat more important to the working team than the extrinsic motivational factors. Goals were something that all the respondents worked with and considered where important in their work.

Bakgrund och problem: Motivation är ett stort begrepp och i mina efterforskningar fann jag att behov, mål samt inre och yttre motivationsfaktorer förekom ofta inom forskningen. Därigenom blev jag intresserad av att undersöka om något av dessa fyra begrepp var mer centrala för individer inom en arbetsgrupp eller om alla fyra var lika centrala. Min problemformulering ämnar undersöka detta. 

Syfte: Syftet med studien är att undersöka vilka motivationsfaktorer som har betydelse för en individs motivation. Detta genom att undersöka områdena behov, mål samt inre och yttre motivationsfaktorer. Jag vill undersöka detta genom att intervjua ett antal anställda inom en arbetsgrupp, inklusive en chef. Jag hoppas att min uppsats ska intressera chefer i arbetsgrupper, framtida chefer och medarbetare att lära sig mer om motivation.

Problemformulering: Vilka faktorer har betydelse för individuell motivation i en arbetsgrupp?

Metod: Jag har genomfört en kvalitativ studie där jag har inhämtat data ifrån fem personer. Intervjuerna är utförda hos respektive respondent och under ca en timmes tid.

Resultat och slutsatser: Studien visar att samtliga fyra faktorer var centrala för motivationen, men att t.ex. vissa delbehov var viktigare för just denna grupp. Det visade sig även att inre motivationsfaktorer var något viktigare för individerna i arbetsgruppen än de yttre motivationsfaktorerna. Mål var något samtliga respondenter arbetade med och ansåg vara viktigt i deras arbete.
