The essay, ”On the Threshold of a War: Eliot Elisofon and LIFE in Finland 1939,” is a close, critical reading of the very first article (in collaboration with Thérèse Bonney) Elisofon produced for LIFE It was published on 23 October 1939, at a time drawing near to the Soviet Union attacking Finland (the Winter War). The essay's focus is on a triangular ideological dramaturgy, listing imperial, orientalist Russia threatening to invade a young underdeveloped Western state. The essay's undercover appeal of mature big-brother US is its accountableness to help. The photographs, their subtitles and literary context, underline the theme of missionary salvation.
