Hemodialysis – a part of life : Patients' experience of living with hemodialysis (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: In Sweden, 600 people suffer from chronic renal failure every year. This is a condition that contributes to the blood not being cleaned from decay products. To replace the lost function of the kidneys a hemodialysis may be used, a treatment that becomes a large part of the daily life for the patients. With good insight surrounding hemodialysis the nurse can meet patients‟ experience of the illness and suffering, and alleviate this as much as possible with adequate actions. Aim: To highlight the patients‟ experience of living with hemodialysis in the daily life. Method: The study was a general literature study, describing and analyzing a number of articles within a specific area. Results: It was discovered that the everyday life of a dialysis patient was experienced as stressful because of the time consuming treatment. They experienced insecurity surrounding the treatment which caused a feeling of lack of control. A feeling of constant fatigue was also experienced, but exercise during the time of the treatment had a positive effect and decreased the fatigue. Conclusion: The nurse needs greater knowledge surrounding the significance of communication and to look to the individual and not just the disease.
