Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Abstract. It is estimated that one to two percent of the population is diagnosed with bipolar disorder. The term bipolar means two poles and involves fluctuations between elevated mood, depression and mood-neutral basis. Relatives of individuals with bipolar disorder may end up in unexpected and stressful situations and their daily lives are often affected. The aim of the study was to describe how relatives to patients with bipolar disorder experience the disorder and how it affects their lives. The method was a literature review that sought to compile the literature in chosen field. The sample consisted of reviewed qualitative and quantitative studies published in the last 10 years in scientific journals. The result demonstrated that relatives can experience stress, relationship issues, stigma, illness, and perceived negative aspects of care and support. The conclusion is that relatives of people with bipolar disorder experience a major stress in the relationship. This study may provide deeper understanding and knowledge about the situation of relatives of persons with bipolar disorder.
