Abstract

Background. The need for drugs delegation is increasing as more and more sick people are cared for at home and too few nurses working in home health care. Because of this, the number of delegations per nurse is often unacceptably high.Aim. The aim of this study was to describe the public health nurses´ experience in drugs delegation to home care staff in home care.Method. In this study a qualitative method with an inductive approach was used. Data collection was conducted through focus group interviews with seven public health nurses. Data were analyzed using qualitative content analysis.Results. The results showed that the public health nurses´ experience in drugs delegation in home care could be summarized in one word, inadequacy. They experienced need for resources, cooperation, education and interpersonal and organizational safety and security. The need for resources included that public health nurses had to delegate because of lack of personnel and lack of time. Need for cooperation included organization, when problems arose when two principals were involved into drugs delegation. Need for education was about lack of knowledge, requests for skills upgrading, theoretical information, practical exercises, teaching methods and aids. Need for interpersonal safety and security included personnel awareness, communication, trust, and voluntariness. Need for organizational safety and security was about dose dispensing, quality assurance and planning.Conclusion. The findings of this study were that one principal would simplify the drug delegation. A common education material would be good for an optimal drug delegation. It was important for the public health nurses to delegate to well known personnel, for safe and secure drugs delegation.Keywords. Drugs delegation, focus groups, home care, home care staff, public health nurse,  qualitative content analysis.
