Abstract [en]

In today’s dynamic business landscape, Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) considerations have become critical factors that shape organizational strategies and project management practices. This study explores how the integration of ESG factors into IT project management impacts the initiation and planning stages of the project life cycle. Through an interview with five ESG experts, valuable insights are gained regarding the current state of ESG in the IT domain. The qualitative data analysis reveals key factors associated with incorporating ESG into IT project management, particularly during the initiation and planning phases. Findings indicate that integrating ESG considerations helps to define long-term sustainable goals, shapes IT project strategies, and influences decision-making processes at early project stages. The incorporation of ESG also leads to the development of more holistic and sustainable IT infrastructures, impacting both technology adoption and business model innovation. The integration of ESG considerations opens up new pathways for IT project management, enabling organizations to focus on long-term outcomes. IT plays a decisive role in helping companies achieve their technological potential while fostering the development of new corporate and business models. Sustainability is increasingly becoming a cornerstone of IT strategy, guiding infrastructure specifications, informing holistic decisions about technology, and serving as a model for resource utilization and growth. This thesis delves deeper into how ESG influences the initiation and planning stages, helping to understand their specific effects on these critical project lifecycle stages. The study employs thematic analysis to process data from semi-structured interviews, aiming to provide valuable insights and pave the way for future work in the field of ESG integration in IT project management.
