Ethical Climate and Leadership in the Police : Perceptions of Sergeants and Police within a Swedish Police Station (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This study explores how the ethical climate is perceived and how it influences leadership practices at a police station within the Swedish Police Authority's operational policing context. Based on qualitative interviews with five police officers and supervisors, the study examines key themes such as care, adherence to law, hierarchical structures, organizational norms, and performance pressures. Findings indicate that a care-oriented climate often prevails among frontline officers, but hierarchical distance and performance-driven demands may hinder ethical and supportive leadership. Using the theory of ethical climate and thematic analysis, the study provides deeper insights into the interaction between ethics, leadership, and organizational culture in everyday police work.
