Abstract [en]

Background: The first identified case of Covid-19 was detected in China in late 2019. Covid-19 is the infectious disease that would pose new challenges to organizations, with patients and nurses being particularly affected. Patients experience hospitalization during the pandemic as ambivalent. Positive aspects relate to trust in the care provided, while negative feelings such as loneliness, anxiety and fear in the prevailing uncertainty. The nurses’ responsibility in this is to meet patients’ needs of security, continuity, and safety, in accordance with evidence-based care. Aim: The aim of this study was to map nurses’ experiences of caring for patients with Covid-19 in inpatient care.  Method: The study was based on a general literature review, meaning that research was compiled from eleven scientific articles with both qualitative and quantitative approaches. Result: The result identified three themes. The first theme was nurses’ experience of psychological strain. The second theme was nurses’ experiences of lack of knowledge and uncertainty while providing care. The third theme was nurses’ experiences with protective equipment while providing care. Conclusion: The most prominent challenges experienced by nurses during the Covid-19 pandemic were psychological stress, uncertainty, lack of knowledge, and negative experiences with personal protective equipment. The results generated an understanding of the nurses’ challenges and provide valuable knowledge for managing future crises or pandemics.
