Abstract [en]

Quantum cascade lasers (QCLs) are promising semiconductor lasers with applications in environmental monitoring, medical diagnostics, and optical communication. Despite significant advancements, commercial software for the design and simulation of their dynamics is still lacking, primarily due to their complex multi-level structure.

In this thesis, a simulation tool has been developed in MATLAB for static analysis, large-signal analysis, and small-signal analysis of quantum cascade lasers. The software is based on a QCL model with four rate equations, originally published by Hamadou. Additionally, a simplified model has been developed, based on conventional semiconductor laser theory, using only two rate equations adapted for QCLs. The results show that the simplified model is sufficiently accurate in most cases. This implies that existing simulation tools for conventional semiconductor lasers can be easily adapted for the simulation of quantum cascade lasers, making analysis more accessible for both research and practical applications

Kvantkaskadlasrar (QCL) är lovande halvledarlasrar med tillämpningar inom miljöövervakning, medicinsk diagnostik och optisk kommunikation. Trots betydande framsteg saknas fortfarande kommersiell mjukvara för design och simulering av deras dynamik, vilket beror på deras komplexa fler-nivåstruktur.

I denna avhandling har ett simuleringsverktyg utvecklats i MATLAB för statisk analys, storsignalanalys och småsignalanalys av kvantkaskadlasrar. Mjukvaran baseras på en QCL-modell med fyra rate-ekvationer, ursprungligen publicerad av Hamadou. Dessutom har en förenklad modell utvecklats, baserad på konventionell halvledarlaserteori, med endast två rate-ekvationer anpassade för QCL. Resultaten visar att den förenklade modellen i de flesta fall är tillräckligt noggrann. Detta innebär att befintliga simuleringsverktyg för konventionella halvledarlasrar enkelt kan anpassas för simulering av kvantkaskadlasrar, vilket gör analysen mer tillgänglig för både forskning och praktiska tillämpningar.
