Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The Cocktail party effect describes the human ability to distinguish and perceive speech and identify its direction even in noisy environments. For a long time, various methods have been used to simulate the direction and distance to virtual audio sources in a 3D environment. With stereo headphones, this is mainly done using amplitude panned audio and binaural audio. Augmented reality (AR) is a growing medium that mixes virtual elements with physical reality. However, few studies have compared different audio reproduction methods in the AR context, especially regarding facilitating the Cocktail party effect. This study therefore aimed to fill this gap in knowledge. Design science was applied to develop an artifact that met the study's requirements for comparing audio reproduction methods. Experiments with the artifact and interviews were conducted with ten participants. The interviews were transcribed and examined using thematic analysis. Quantitative data was collected and compiled to triangulate the qualitative data. The results indicate that amplitude panned audio was perceived as better for separation of speech, but binaural audio was perceived as more realistic. With this in mind, AR developers could make use of the audio reproduction method users find more clear or natural, depending on the purpose.
