SAMMANFATTNING

Introduktion: Väntetiden för en hjärt- och/eller lungtransplantation är lång, både på grund av den ökande efterfrågan samt bristen på organ. Detta leder till att många patienter avlider innan de får ett nytt organ. Osäkerheten kring när transplantation ska genomföras kan innebära en psykisk påfrestning både för patienterna och deras närstående. Trots att det finns viss forskning om de fysiska och psykiska effekterna av väntetiden hos transplantationspatienter, saknas fortfarande en djupare förståelse för patienters emotionella och psykiska upplevelse under väntetiden. Därför är det viktigt att förstå hur dessa patienter upplever väntetiden på en djupare nivå för att möjliggöra en bättre omvårdnad av patienter.

Syfte: Att beskriva upplevelser hos patienter under väntetiden på hjärt- och/eller lungtransplantation.

Metod: En allmän litteraturöversikt med deskriptiv design och kvalitativ ansats. Tio vetenskapliga artiklar hämtades från databaserna PubMed och CINAHL.

Resultat: Två kategorier och sex subkategorier identifierades. Det framkom att patienter som väntade på hjärt- och/eller lungtransplantation upplevde både positiva och negativa känslor. Stöd och information från andra transplantationspatienter och vårdpersonal hade positiv effekt på deras upplevelser under väntetiden. Transplantation sågs som en möjlighet till överlevnad men väckte samtidigt känslor av både skuld och tacksamhet. Väntetiden upplevdes dessutom som lång och väckte både känslor av oro och rädsla.

Slutsats: Väntetiden för hjärt- och lungtransplantation präglades av både positiva och negativa känslor. Patienternas upplevelser under väntetiden påverkades positivt av stöd och information från både andra transplantationspatienter och vårdpersonal. Trots detta finns det andra omvårdnadsområde som skulle kunna förbättras såsom information, psykosocialt stöd och individanpassad vård. Ytterligare forskning om hur patienter hanterar sina känslor och tankar samt vilket stöd de behöver för att kunna hantera dessa känslor och tankar under väntetiden skulle kunna möjliggöra en förbättrad omvårdnaden av patienter.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: The waiting time for a heart and/or lung transplant is long, due to both the increasing demand and the shortage of organs. As a result, many patients die before they receive a transplant. The uncertainty regarding the timing of the procedure can cause psychological distress for both patients and their relatives. While some research has addressed the physical and psychological effects of the waiting period for transplant patients, there is still a lack of a deeper understanding of their emotional and psychological experiences during this time. Therefore, it is important to understand how these patients experience the waiting time on a deeper level to enable better nursing care for the patients.

Aim: To describe experiences of patients during the waiting time for heart and/or lung transplant.

Methods: A general literature review with a descriptive design and qualitative approach. Ten scientific articles were retrieved from the PubMed and CINAHL databases.

Results: Two categories and six subcategories were identified. The findings revealed that patients waiting for heart and/or lung transplants experienced both positive and negative emotions. Support and information from other transplant patients and healthcare professionals had a positive impact on their experiences during the waiting period. The transplant was seen as a chance for survival but also evoked feelings of guilt and gratitude. The waiting time was perceived as long, causing feelings of anxiety and fear.

Conclusion: The waiting time for heart and lung transplantation was characterized by both positive and negative emotions. Patients' experiences during the waiting period were positively influenced by support and information from both other transplant patients and healthcare professionals. Despite this, there are other areas of care that could be improved, such as information, psychosocial support and individualized care. Further research into how patients manage their emotions and thoughts and what support they need to be able to manage these emotions and thoughts during the waiting period could enable improved patient care.
