Abstract [en]

Introduction:Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is a treatment method for, among otherthings, severe depression and other psychiatric conditions. The treatment involves a short, induced seizure under anesthesia. ECT gives good results in many people, but there is a highrisk of suffering from memory problems and other cognitive problems.

Aim: The aim of the study was to investigate the experiences of ECT treatment in patientssuffering from mental illness.

Method: A qualitative literature study in which ten scientific articles with a qualitativeapproach were analyzed. The databases used in the literature search were PubMed, CINAHL,and PsycInfo.

Result: The result of the study shows that ECT for the most part has a good and fast effect -even though a lot of patients get side effects like memory loss. These effects did affect thepatients negatively and lowered their quality of life. Patients felt like they got too littleinformation about the treatment and that they didn't feel involved in their treatment plan.Family and friends who were supportive contributed to a better experience for the patients.

Conclusion: The literature review shows that many people experienced ECT treatment aspositive. Negative experiences involved memory difficulties, insufficient information andlack of participation in the treatment planning process. To improve the experience, thehealthcare provider should provide the patient with information about their treatment andmake them participate in their care.
