Optimizing Cloud Cost Management: A FinOps-Driven Approach
Uppsala University, Disciplinary Domain of Science and Technology, Mathematics and Computer Science, Department of Information Technology.
2025 (English)Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
Abstract [en]

The rapid adoption of cloud computing gives organizations better efficiency, scalability, and flexibility. However, this shift to the cloud has introduced significant challenges in managing andcontrolling cloud resource expenses. Without robust cost management strategies, operational costs can escalate, depleting the financial benefit of using the cloud. In this thesis, I explore the implementation of cloud cost management using the FinOps framework to address these challenges. By focusing on the two domains of understanding and optimizing cloud usage and costs, I aim to improve the accessibility and accountability of cost and usage data to increase the awareness of cloud spending across an organization. I’ll present the insights from this data in detailed reports for various stakeholders, and based on these insights, I’ll suggest actionable rate, budget, and allocation optimizations.
