Nurse’s experience of providing care for children at the end of life – a literature study (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Pediatric palliative focuses on promoting quality of life and providing symptom relief in children at the end of life. It encompasses both physical and psychological care, with pain relief, communication, and quality of life being central elements. In pediatric palliative care, it is important to consider both the patient and their loved ones, with the nurse´s role being to create a sense of security and adapt care based on individual needs.

Aim: The purpose of this study was to investigate the nurse´s experience of caring for children at the end life.

Method: The study was conducted as a general literature review based on ten qualitative and two quantitative articles.

Results: The result shows that nurses experience grief and difficulties when caring for children at end of life. This becomes notably challenging when religious or cultural aspects needs to be taken in into consideration. Challenges in communication, in particular when dealing with difficult conversations, form the basis for the ethical dilemmas that the nurse faces.

Conclusion: Nurses who care for children at the end of life encounter emotional and ethical challenges that require support, education and clear guidelines.
