This thesis examines how the size of the mobile phone impacts its usability for men and women, focusing on anthropometric differences in hand size. The starting point is theories on “gender-neutral” technology and the gender data gap, with Caroline Criado Perez’s book Invisible Women serving as an inspiration. Despite mobile phones being marketed as universal products, previous research and the findings of this study indicate that their design does not accommodate women’s typically smaller hands.  

The study was conducted using semi-structured interviews with twelve participants, six men and six women. The interview material was analyzed thematically to identify recurring themes in participants’ experiences with mobile phone size. The results reveal that women experience greater difficulties with grip, reachability, and precision, leading to what all the women in the study reports as physical discomfort in their hands and joints. Men reported fewer problems and described the size of their mobile phones as more suitable, though the results also highlight that men encounter minor challenges with mobile phone size.  

The women in the study exhibited a tendency to adapt to the challenges posed by mobile phone size, such as adjusting their grip or using other body parts for support. At the same time, they expressed a desire for smaller and more ergonomic phones better suited to their hand size. The men, on the other hand, displayed a certain ambivalence, initially expressing satisfaction but becoming increasingly critical as their reflections deepened.  

The findings emphasize the need for a more inclusive design process that accounts for variations in hand size and gender-specific needs. By highlighting gender-specific differences in these user experiences, this study aims to raise awareness of the importance of gender-segregated data and inspire further research and development of products accessible to all. The study emphasizes how current design standards are based on a male norm, which not only excludes women but also limits their ability to use technology on equal terms with men.  

Den här uppsatsen undersöker hur mobiltelefonens storlek påverkar användarupplevelsen hos män och kvinnor utifrån handstorlekens antropometriska skillnader. Utgångspunkten är teorier om “könsneutral” teknik och könsuppdelad data, där Caroline Criado Perez bok Osynliga Kvinnor varit inspirationskälla. Trots att mobiltelefonen marknadsförs som en universell produkt, visar tidigare forskning och resultaten från denna studie att dess design inte passar kvinnors i genomsnitt mindre händer. 

 Studien genomfördes med semistrukturerade intervjuer med tolv deltagare där sex var män och sex var kvinnor. Intervjumaterialet undersöktes genom en tematisk analys, för att identifiera återkommande teman i intervjuobjektens upplevelser om mobiltelefonens storlek. Resultaten visar att kvinnor i större utsträckning upplever svårigheter med grepp, nåbarhet och precision och att dessa svårigheter leder till fysiska obehag i händer och leder hos samtliga av de kvinnliga intervjuobjekten. Män rapporterade färre problem och beskrev i högre grad mobiltelefonens storlek som lämplig, även om resultaten till viss del visar på att männen också upplever mindre utmaningar med mobiltelefonens storlek.

 Kvinnorna i studien visade en tendens att anpassa sig till de utmaningar som mobiltelefonens storlek medför, bland annat genom att justera grepp eller använda andra kroppsdelar som stöd. Samtidigt uttryckte de en önskan om mindre och mer ergonomiska telefoner som bättre passar deras händer. Männen däremot visade på en viss ambivalens, där de inledningsvis uttryckte en nöjdhet – men längre in i reflektionerna blev allt mer kritiska.

Resultatet understryker behovet av en mer inkluderande designprocess som tar hänsyn till variationer i handstorlek och könsspecifika behov. Genom att lyfta fram könsspecifika skillnader i dessa användarupplevelser hoppas denna studie bidra till en ökad medvetenhet om vikten av könsuppdelad data, samt inspirera till vidare forskning och utveckling av produkter som är tillgängliga för alla. Studien belyser hur befintliga designstandarder är baserade på en manlig norm, och hur denna norm inte bara exkluderar kvinnor utan också begränsar deras möjligheter att använda teknik på lika villkor som män.
