The role of communication in medical weight loss : a study on ozempic's impact (English)
Abstract [en]

The study examines how commercial healthcare providers portray the semaglutide drug Ozempic as a weight loss method in their marketing. The study is based on discourse theory and Consumer Culture Theory (CCT) to analyze how different actors, such as patients, doctors and experts are represented and addressed in communication. Furthermore, it investigates the norms and ideals related to body and health that are conveyed.  Using a qualitative discourse analytical method, text from websites and marketing material are analyzed to identify key symbols, equivalence chains and identities. The results of the study indicate that the design of marketing influences how the drugs are perceived and used, where commercial and medical discourses may be in conflict with each other. Market communication can shape individuals’ choices and reinforce prevailing norms around weight loss while presenting semaglutide as a simple and effective solution.  The study highlights the need for scrutiny of corporate communication regarding medical weight loss, as well as the importance of regulation and clearer guidelines to ensure fair prescription practices. For future research, a closer analysis is suggested on how marketing affects patients’ perceptions of medical weight loss and how commercial healthcare providers could adjust their communication in response to changes in the pharmaceutical industry.
