Providing care for patients at the end of life : A literature review from the nurse's perspective (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Palliative care focuses on alleviating suffering and providing support to patients in the final stages of life. Nurses play a crucial role in ensuring a sense of security and delivering both medical and emotional care. Despite this, nurses face challenges such as time constraints, ethical dilemmas, and communication difficulties, all of which impact the quality of care.

Aim: The purpose was to describe nurses' experiences of providing palliative care to patients at the end of life.

Method: This study is a qualitative literature review based on ten scientific articles.

Findings: Nurses experience time constraints as a major challenge, making it difficult to provide patients with the time and support they need. Communication barriers, particularly language differences and a lack of training in difficult conversations, create additional difficulties. Furthermore, cultural differences and the role of the family influence care, sometimes leading to ethical dilemmas.

Conclusion: To improve palliative care, nurses need more support in the form of resources, education, and better working conditions. An increased understanding of communication and cultural aspects can contribute to more person-centered and dignified care.
