Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Ambulance nurses are regularly exposed to traumatic events, which may impact their mental health and ability to work. Peer support has been identified as an important resource for managing these challenges, but there is a lack of knowledge on how support initiatives can be designed to be both effective and personally adapted. Aim: To explore the ambulance nurse’s experiences of peer support after traumatic events. Method: A qualitative interview study was conducted with nine ambulance nurses. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using qualitative content analysis. Results: The study identified one overarching theme – the ambulance nurse’s journey through trauma and processing – along with four categories: peer support, the ambulance nurse’s emotional processing and coping, conditions that hinder or promote support, and support structures within ambulance care. The findings indicate that ambulance nurses perceive peer support as a crucial factor for recovery, but that support needs to be both accessible and tailored to individual needs. Conclusion: Peer support is a central part of ambulance nurses’ coping strategies following traumatic events. However, to be effective, it needs to be activated more systematically while allowing for individual adaptation. The findings may contribute to the development of more sustainable and needs-based support structures within prehospital care.
