Den här studien syftar till att ta reda på hur en amerikansk populärkulturell film, Barbie (2023), kan skapa uppfattningar om könsroller, femininitet och maktfördelning bland könen hos unga svenska kvinnor. Med stöd i Judith Butlers teori om genusperformativitet (1988) genomfördes det kvalitativa intervjuer och en tematisk analys på unga svenska kvinnor mellan 18–25 år, där studien är ute efter en djupare förståelse för populärkulturella narrativ, mer specifikt amerikansk porträttering av könsroller, och hur dessa uppfattas och tolkas av unga kvinnor i en svensk kontext. Det empiriska materialet omfattar hela Barbiefilmen där respondenterna skulle ha sett filmen i förväg. Genom en tematisk analys identifierades fyra teman: (1) representation av könsroller, (2) fördelning av makt mellan könen, (3) feminism ochjämställdhet och (4) filmens inverkan på könsroller. Studien visade att filmen Barbie skapade olika uppfattningar hos unga svenska kvinnor och deras syn på könsroller, femininitet och makt. Det framgick i resultatet att respondenterna bekräftade Butlers teori om performativitet där könsrollerna inte var statiska utan förändras över tid och att kön var något vi gör till oss snarare än något vi är. När det kom till uppfattningen av maktfördelningen i filmen såg vissa respondenter en spegling av vår verklighet, medan andra upplevde att filmens skildring av makt var obalanserad och inte främjade feminism. Resultatet visade att svenska tittare tolkar filmen utifrån sina egna kulturella referenser i relation till de svenska jämställdhets idealen. 

Abstract [en]

This study aims to explore how an American pop culture film, Barbie (2023), can shape perceptions of gender roles, femininity, and the distribution of power between genders among young Swedish women. Using Judith Butler’s theory of gender performativity (1988) as a framework, qualitative interviews and a thematic analysis were conducted with Swedish women aged 18-25. The study seeks to gain a deeper understanding of popular cultural narratives, specifically the American portrayal of gender roles, and how these are perceived and interpreted by young women in a Swedish context. The empirical material includes the entire Barbie film, which all respondents had watched in advance. Through thematic analysis, four key themes were identified: (1) representation of gender roles, (2) distribution of power between genders, (3) feminism and gender equality, and (4) the film’s impact on perceptions of gender roles. The study found that the Barbie film influenced young Swedish women’s perceptions of gender roles, femininity, and power. The results supported Butler’s theory of performativity (1988), showing that gender roles are not static but evolve over time, and that gender is something we perform rather than something we inherently are. In terms of power distribution in the film, some respondents saw it as a reflection of reality, while others perceived it as unbalanced and not aligned with feminist ideals. The findings also revealed that Swedish viewers interpret the film through their own cultural lens, particularly in relation to Swedish ideals of gender equality.
