Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

ABSTRACT

Background: In Sweden, approximately 350 children are diagnosed with cancer each year, requiring care and treatment. There is a shortage of nurses in pediatric oncology, which is considered a threat to adequate childhood cancer care. Nurses play a significant role in caring for both the child and their family, however it can be stressful. Aim: The aim of this study was to compile and describe nurses´ experiences and perceptions of caring for children with cancer. Method: This is a descriptive literature review. The PubMed database was used to identify eleven articles with a qualitative approach. Main Results: The findings are presented in four main categories and ten subcategories. Caring for children with cancer caused emotional strain, especially when children were in the end-of-life stage. Despite this, it was considered a rewarding profession. Both the children and their families were cared for, with key aspects including building relationships and effective communication to understand their needs. The nurses experienced organizational challenges which complicated their work. Conclusion: Pediatric oncology nurses experienced both challenging and rewarding emotions, which were managed in different ways. Building relationships and maintaining effective communication with the child and their family made it easier to provide quality care. Organizational challenges and a lack of emotional support could complicate their work. The literature review can provide increased knowledge about nurses' perceptions and experiences of pediatric oncology, which may increase the understanding of the subject, improve working conditions, and ensure safer care for children if more staff are available.
