Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Diabetes type 1 is a chronic disease that can affect children and adolescents. Care for children and adolescents should be adapted to their maturity and development level. The nurse has an important role in healthcare through their competence in education. Dorothea Orems nursing theory has a central part in self-care. Every individual has their right to have needs met. Aim: To describe the effects of nursing educational interventions for children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes. Method: This study is a descriptive literature study. The results is based on nine articles with a quantitative approach using an experimental and quasi experimental design. Main results: The results show that nursing educational interventions have an important impact in children and adolescents on diabetes care. The educational intervention showed a variation in the effects that occurred. The intervention was more structured with continuous follow-ups and showed greater effects on children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes. In the studies that did not show any significant difference, was a lack of structure in the educational intervention and follow up by a nurse. Conclusion: Various nursing educational interventions for children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes had an effect on the HbA1c value that decreased, knowledge increased and self-care and independence decreased. In a few of the studies the nursing educational intervention had no significant difference. A long term effect was lacking in some studies due to a lack of follow- ups and continuous support.
