Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Polycystic ovary syndrome is a hormonal imbalance withvarying symptoms. The cause is still unclear, but lifestyle changes and earlyintervention can have a positive effect. Aim: The aim of this study was tohighlight factors that affect quality of life among women with polycysticovary syndrome (PCOS). Method: General literature review, data obtainedfrom the CINAHL and PubMed databases. The results of the study arebased on 10 original articles with grade 1. Results: Women with polycysticovary syndrome experienced a reduced quality of life because of thesymptoms of the syndrome. Three main themes were identified ascontributing factors: appearance-related symptoms such as elevated BodyMass Index and hirsutism, reproductive health and intimacy with menstrualdisorders, infertility and sexual functions, and mental illness. Thesesymptoms affected the women's physical, mental and social well-being,resulting in a reduced quality of life. Conclusion: Women experienced apoorer quality of life where symptoms were the underlying factors. Theyexperienced worry, shame and anxiety, which led to an increased tendencyto isolate themselves from society. This negatively affected their social andpsychological well-being. To provide adequate care and support, healthcareprofessionals must acquire enhanced knowledge and a deeperunderstanding.
