Abstract [en]

Technology advancements, evolving consumer preferences, and an increasing focus on innovation have fueled startup activity in recent years. However, growing a business from the ground up to sustainable development presents considerable challenges, particularly amid intense industry competition and shifting regulations. Sweden, known for its robust social welfare programs and innovation ecosystem, has become a hub for startups. Despite a favorable business environment, entrepreneurs face significant challenges in scaling and achieving success.

This thesis investigates the nuances of startup growth in Sweden, focusing on the scaling challenges faced by three Swedish companies. As these startups transition from early stages to sustained growth, they must overcome strategic and operational barriers such as high operational costs, regulatory complexities, and fierce market competition. While Sweden offers invaluable state support, including government grants and incubators, bureaucratic challenges and regulatory shifts can impede access to resources and financing.

Through a detailed case study analysis of three firms—Östgötasvamp, Tistelvind, and Särtshöga Vingård—this research explores the specific obstacles they encounter while scaling. By examining their strategies and struggles, this thesis aims to highlight the broader dynamics within Swedish entrepreneurship, providing insights into the challenges and opportunities that arise as startups strive for long-term growth and success.
