Abstract [en]

Anticipation and pattern recognition are two important perceptual-cognitive abilities in soccer, where rapid decision-making in time-pressured situations is crucial for the outcome of the game. Previous research has studied anticipation and pattern recognition separately, but this study has examined both abilities within the same test. The purpose of this study was to examine expertise-based differences in anticipation and pattern recognition in football, whether pattern recognition forms the basis for anticipation, and how these abilities are influenced by pressure. The study also aims to highlight the relationship between decision-specific reinvestment and performance under high pressure. The study included 30 participants, divided into 15 beginners and 15 experienced football players aged 19 to 27 (M = 22.67, SD = 1.56) who participated in the experiment. The tests were conducted under conditions of both low and high pressure, where participants responded to questions evaluating their performance in anticipation and pattern recognition. After both test conditions were completed, participants filled out the Decision-Specific Reinvestment Scale (DSRS) to measure their decision-specific reinvestment. The results showed that experienced players performed significantly better than beginners in both anticipation and pattern recognition under both test conditions. The results indicated that participants exhibited a statistically significant improvement in anticipation for sequences previously presented in the test. The manipulation of pressure resulted in a statistically significant difference in perceived pressure between the low and high-pressure test conditions. There was also no significant main effect of pressure on performance in anticipation and pattern recognition. Additionally, decision-specific reivestment did not show a statistically significant correlation with performance under high pressure.
