Abstract [en]

The purpose of this essay was to examine the curriculum for the compulsory school– LGR22, to discern what it stated about gender and gender biases in school. To do this, a popular children’s novel called Pax: Nidstången was used to examine whether literature displayed in the classroom adhered to the statements made in the curriculum or not. The method that was used in this essay was a textual analysis of the curriculum to interpret what it stated about gender and gender biases, to afterwards apply them to Pax: Nidstången. A content analysis was conducted on the curriculum as well as the novel, with the focus on establishing the presence of certain themes and topics in the material. The results showed that while the curriculum is an important document in school and provides several statements regarding gender and gender biases, the process of highlighting these core values in teaching depends not only on the teacher but the choice of material, in this case literature, which was the primary object of the analysis. Furthermore, the results also showed that although Pax: Nidstången does not completely adhere to the teachings of the curriculum, it still can be used to facilitate the teaching of gender and gender awareness to a limited extent, based on themes and topics of relevance such as gender biases, to achieve the goals stated in the curriculum.
