Abstract [sv]

Time Exercise Questonnaire, Anti-fat Attiude Scale, Athletic identity measurement scale, The Sociocutural Attitudes Towards Appearance Scale-4.

Abstract [en]

The purpose of the present study was to examine whether athletic identity, internalization of the thin/slim ideal, and internalization of the athletic ideal mediated the relationship between exercise frequency and explicit attitudes towards overweight individuals. After excluding 14 participants due to health conditions that prevented their physical activity, the final sample consisted of 141 participants aged 17-74 years (55 men, 85 women, one person who did not wish to specify gender; M age = 26.35, SD = 9.64 years). A quantitative cross-sectional study was conducted, where the independent variable, dependent variable, and three mediating variables were measured using the following questionnaires: the Godin Leisure-Time Exercise Questionnaire, the Anti-fat Attitudes Scale, the Athletic Identity Measurement Scale, and the Sociocultural Attitudes Towards Appearance Scale-4.The results revealed a significant indirect effect between exercise frequency and explicit attitudes through athletic identity and internalization of the athletic ideal, but not through internalization of the thin/slim ideal. The results indicate that athletic identity and internalization of the athletic ideal mediate the relationship between exercise frequency and explicit attitudes towards overweight individuals. These findings should be interpreted with caution, as this is a cross- sectional study and based on subjective measures of negative attitudes. Future research should conduct a longitudinal study and use more objective measures of negative attitudes towards overweight individuals.
