The Republic of Gilead: How Illusions of Power Lead to Oppression: An Analysis of The Handmaid’s Tale Through Feminist Criticism and a Neo-Marxist Perspective

Abstract [en]

This analysis examines the intersection of class and gender oppression illustrated in The Handmaid’s Tale through the characters Offred, Serena Joy, and the Commander. It will use three theoretical frameworks: Neo-Marxism, feminist criticism, and Michel Foucault’s “The Subject and Power.” These theories will collectively explore Gilead’s structures and rules that stratify both men and women in an authoritarian system with systematic oppression. The analysis of these dynamics reveals how class and gender oppression support one another to ensure the stability of Gilead's power structure. For example, Serena Joy upholds the patriarchy by exerting her limited power over Offred. However, her class position allows her to break laws without facing repercussions. Finally, this analysis contributes to recognizing how totalitarian states manipulate and use ideology to maintain power and control.
