Norms on Display : The Smartwatch as a Tool for Young Women's Self-Control (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This bachelor's thesis examines how four women experience norms related to health and exercise and how their use of smartwatches affects them, from a norm-critical and sociocultural perspective. The study employs a qualitative method consisting of diary entries and semi-structured interviews, identifying three central themes: Strict norms stress the participants, the norm that exercise should lead to progression, and the smartwatch as a tool for validation to ensure that the participants meet the norms. The results indicate that smartwatches can strengthen existing norms and influence users' relationship with their own health and exercise. The discussion also highlights a contradiction in which smartwatches are marketed as tools for health and well-being, while the study's findings suggest that, in a health and exercise context, the use of a smartwatch can contribute to feelings of anxiety, worry, and stress.
