Abstract [en]
The purpose of our qualitative study is to examine the process ofdisengagement for individuals who wish to leave criminality. We havetherefore based our research on two key questions, what factors may besignificant for individuals seeking to exit a criminal lifestyle and howsocietal support can be structured to reduce risk of relapse. To explore this,we conducted six qualitative interviews with individuals working inorganizations that assist people in leaving or who have already left a criminallife, as well as supporting individuals in their transition to a life outside ofcrime. The collected data from the interviews revealed that social networks, social interventions, personal motivation and significant life events werecrucial factors in the disengagement process. Additionally, it was found thatdepending on life circumstances, access to support, and social networks, thedisengagement process could be positively influenced if individuals hadgood access to these factors. However, a lack of such support could alsocontribute to an increased risk of relapsing into criminality. We thenanalyzed these findings in relation to our theoretical frameworks, the Exitprocess, criminality as lifestyle and labeling theory, as well as previousresearch in the field, to develop a well nuanced understanding of the subject.
