Patients' experiences of encounters with healthcare insomatoform disorders : A general literature study (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Patients with somatoform disorders suffer from a condition of medically unexplained symptoms that have developed because of psychological stress or trauma. This literature review may contribute to increased understanding of patients' experiences of encounters with healthcare in somatoform disorders, which may serve as a basis for reflection and further knowledge development among students and health care professionals. Aim: The aim of this literature review was to highlight the patients' experiences of encounters with healthcare in somatoform disorders. Method: A general literature review with an inductive approach was conducted, where scientific articles were analyzed according to Popenoe et al. (2021). Results: Experiences of trust and validation in the care relationship were a crucial factor in the patient´s experience of healthcare. Experiences of collaboration and coherence were negatively described by patients, due to major shortcomings that resulted in a fragmented and inefficient care process. Experiences of healthcare professionals’ competence was perceived as insufficient, as patients experienced that their symptoms were dismissed or explained as purely psychological, which created frustration and distrust towards healthcare professionals. Conclusion: Increased awareness and competence among healthcare professionals can improve the treatment of patients with somatoform disorder and reduce the risk of increased symptoms and suffering.
