Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Lung cancer is a disease with high mortality and a complex symptom burden. The diagnosis is often detected at a late stage, which reduces the chance of surviva l. Patients with lung cancer require palliative care that adopts a holistic perspective, addressing physical, psychological, social, and spiritual needs to ensure quality of life. where the concept of quality of life is central. Research on early palliative care and its impact on quality of life in lung cancer is limited. Purpose: The purpose was to shed light on patients’ experiences of early palliative care in relation to quality of life in lung cancer. Method: The study is a general literature review based on nine scientific articles analyzed using an inductive approach. The searches were made in the databases CINAHL, PubMed and APA PsycInfo. Results: Three categories were identified: Patients’ experience of early palliative care interventions, Patients’ experience of physical well-being and symptom burden and Patients’ experience of early palliative care and psychological well-being. When measuring over a longer period, early integration of palliative care shows an improved quality of life in lung cancer. An improved quality of life is due to increased symptom relief and increased care contact with several professions. Early integration of palliative care was associated with a lover incidence of mental health problems. Conclusion: Improved quality of life is experienced by patients with lung cancer who receive early relief of both physical and mental symptoms. A multi-professional collaboration contributes to individual needs being met. Early palliative care reduces the use of aggressive cancer treatment that negatively affects the quality of life.
