Retaining Young Athletes : A Study on Need Support and Motivation in Team Sports (English)
Abstract [sv]
Abstract [en]
The aim of the study was to examine whether self-determined motivation, controlled motivation, and need support predict the intention to drop out among team sport athletes. The study employed a quantitative cross-sectional design, with data collected through digital surveys. The total number of participants was 101 team sport athletes, representing various team sports. Based on Self-Determination Theory (SDT) and previous research, three hypotheses were formulated: 1) There is a negative relationship between self-determined motivation and the intention to drop out among team sport athletes, 2) There is a positive relationship between controlled motivation and the intention to drop out among team sport athletes and 3) There is a negative relationship between need support and the intention to drop out among team sport athletes. The hypotheses were tested using multiple regression analysis, which showed that self-determined motivation and need support had a significant negative relationship with the intention to drop out. However, the results indicated that controlled motivation did not have a positive relationship with the intention to drop out, which partially deviates from previous research and theory.
