Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: The nurse anesthetist has a central role in perioperative care. Understanding the patient's experiences of vulnerability in perioperative care can improve the person-centered care that can, and should, be provided.

Purpose: To analyze, illustrate and concretize the concept of vulnerability in perioperative care based on the patients' experiences.

Method: A conceptual analysis of the concept of vulnerability has been performed using Walker and Avant's structured model.

Results: Loneliness, fear, lack of information and powerlessness were attributes that caused patients to experience vulnerability in perioperative care. Three cases have been written to illustrate vulnerability and how the nurse anesthetist can eliminate the feeling during the care process.

Conclusion: The concept of vulnerability has a negative connotation that often entails negative feelings or incidents. As a nurse anesthetist, it is important to be aware of the fact that being vulnerable to occurs in perioperative care. The nurse anesthetist needs to know what vulnerability means in order to be able to actively work to reduce the patient's experience of vulnerability by creating safety, involving the patient through information and a person-centered care
