This study explores the concept of the ‘green prison’ and its intersections with the realities of the French prison system. Conducted during a twenty-six-week internship with the French prison administration, a mixed-methods approach is employed, including a literature and historical review, semi-structured interviews, and an external-insider participant perspective. Findings reveal that the green prison remains an emergent concept in France, encompassing both vegetated prisons, which integrate green spaces, and sustainable prisons, which aim for environmental responsibility. Critiques of the green prison leads to consider it as an idealized prison that helps to renew the penal system by establishing an attainable and aspirational horizon – i.e. a new model prison. This theoretical framework is confronted with the practical realities of French prison administration and the examination of the introduction of vegetation in maximum-security centers. While both the model prison framework and the vegetation initiatives focus are found to be limited, they highlight the paradoxes inherent to the prison system, the absence of jails in the green prison considerations, and the urgent need for an environmental justice approach within the carceral context. 

Den här studien utforskar begreppet ”grönt fängelse” och sätter det i relation till verkligheten inom det franska fängelsesystemet. Studien genomfördes under en tjugosex veckor lång praktik inom den franska kriminalvården och bygger på en mixad metodansats, inklusive en litteraturöversikt, en historisk översikt och semistrukturerade intervjuer. Resultaten visar att begreppet ”grönt fängelse” fortfarande är ett framväxande koncept i Frankrike. Det omfattar både en strävan att grönska anstalterna och en ambition att göra dem mer hållbara genom att uppfylla vissa kriterier för hållbar utveckling. Kritiken mot det gröna fängelset leder mig till att betrakta det som en idealiserad fängelsemodell, en sorts mönsterfängelse som bidrar till att förnya diskursen om kriminalvård. Jag sätter denna teoretiska ram i relation till den franska kriminalvårdens verklighet och möjligheterna att grönska rastgårdar i säkerhetsanstalter. Även om modellen med mönsterfängelser och fokuset på grönskningsinitiativ har sina begränsningar, belyser de samtidigt fängelsesystemets paradoxer och synliggör att häkten helt utelämnas i diskussionen. Detta understryker behovet av en mer heltäckande ansats som inkluderar miljörättvisa. 

Cette étude explore le concept de « prison verte » et le confronte aux réalités du système pénitentiaire français. Elle a été réalisée au cours d'un stage de vingt-six semaines au sein de l'administration pénitentiaire française et emploie une approche mixte, comprenant une revue de la littérature, un encart historique et des entretiens semi-structurés. Les résultats de cette étude révèlent que la notion de « prison verte » demeure un concept émergent en France, englobant la volonté de végétaliser les établissements pénitentiaires français et la volonté de les rendre durables, c'est-à-dire remplissant certains critères du développement durable. Les critiques de la prison verte m'amènent à la considérer comme une prison idéalisée qui aide à renouveler le discours du système carcéral – c'est-à-dire une prison modèle. Je confronte ce cadre théorique aux réalités de l'administration pénitentiaire française, et aux possibilités de végétalisation des cours de promenade en maisons centrales. Bien que le cadre de la prison modèle et le focus mis sur les initiatives de végétalisation soient limités, ils permettent de souligner les paradoxes du système carcéral tout en révélant l'absence de prise en compte des maisons d'arrêt. Ce dernier point met en évidence l'urgence d'adopter une approche intégrant la justice environnementale.
