From stigma to support: A study of participants' experience in the needle exchange program : A general literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]

I studien inkluderades 12 vetenskapliga artiklar.

Abstract [en]

Background: The focus of the needle exchange program is to reduce the risk of HCV-infection through needle exchange. Stigma of people who inject drugs reduces participants participation in needle exchange programs. By including and supporting participants, nurses in needle exchange programs can increase trust, which in turn leads to participants remaining in the program. Aim: To shed light on participants’ experiences of the needle exchange program. Method: The present study is a general literature study with an inductive approach. The study included 12 scientific articles. The resulting articles were processed, reviewed and categorized. Results: Three categories emerged in the results, experiences of treatment from healthcare professionals in the needle exchange program, experiences of the importance of the place of residence when participating in the needle exchange program, experiences of knowledge transfer and information from the needle exchange program. Conclusion: Needle exchange programs should be highlighted and paid attention to in society to create awareness of their work and to reduce stigma. Through a non-judgmental and welcoming care meeting, trust is created and this can make people who participate in the needle exchange program return and stay. Getting good care leads to better health. The needle exchange program should be developed and made visible to be able to meet people who participate in the program in their different care needs.
