Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: People in Sweden are getting older and have longer lifes, which means that more people are affected by diseases and need care. The elderly patient may have complex care needs regardless of whether they still live at home or in a nursing home. It is important for the nurse to meet these needs according to the wishes of the patient and to preserve their sense of participation and autonomy through person-centered care. For this to be possible, a consensus is needed on what person-centered care means. The aim: To map previous research on older patients' experiences of person-centered care. Method: A general literature review was conducted. A total of ten caring science articles were analyzed. During the work, a helicopter perspective and an inductive approach were used. Results: Based on the results of the articles, three themes could be distinguished, these were: To maintain one's dignity, The impact of the environment on well-being and To be able to manage oneself. Conclusion: The elderly believed that care often failed because the nurse lacked sufficient time and respect for the patient's integrity. With increased resources and time, the nurse could provide better person-centered care and avoid stressful situations that cause discomfort to the patient.
