Participation in focus – patients' experiences before and after surgery (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Pre- and postoperative care are crucial for patient security and recovery. Preoperative anxiety can increase pain, but personalised information and supportive conversations decrease worry, anxiety and fear and promote recovery. Pain rating scales like NRS and VAS are central for adequate pain estimation.

Aim: To highlight patients' pain levels in relation to their involvement in preoperative and postoperative care.

Method: An empirical study with a mixed method design and a deductive approach based on SOC. Data was collected via a survey whit open and closed questions for a nuanced analysis of the participants' experiences.

Findings: The participants' experiences of preoperative care are affected by the quality of information. Even though 80% considered themselves well-informed, 52% reported concerns mainly due to insufficient communication. Personalised information and personal treatment appeared to be decisive. 80% of those in postoperative care experienced that they were well-informed, but their level of participation and pain relief varied. High workloads also affected patients' contact with healthcare and some even felt powerless.

Conclusion: Improved communication, clearer information and systematic pain management can strengthen security and ease recovery. Preoperative anxiety is connected to a lack of relevant information and the opportunity to ask questions. Varying postoperative care, especially concerning pain management, creates insecurity. Improved communication, clearer information and a person-centred care model can decrease anxiety, strengthen security and improve recovery.
