Existential questions in patients with cancer : A literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Patients with cancer are often faced with existential questions as they confront their illnessand mortality. This results in a poorer quality of life and mental illness. Holistic care meansthat both physical and mental needs are taken into account. Healthcare professionals oftenmeet patients with existential questions but lack knowledge. Research has shown that it isimportant to take into account the existential dimensions as it affects the entire continuity ofcancer treatment as well as decisions regarding preventive measures, follow-up and generalmanagement of cancer-related aspects.

Aim: The aim was to highlight existential questions in patients with cancer.

Method: The method was literature review. A total of 10 original scientific articles were selected via the databases PubMed and Cinahl Complete.

Result: Four themes emerged in the result, these were: feelings of uncertainty in relation to illness, guilt, thoughts about identity and creating meaning in life.

Conclusion: Patients with cancer often experience a lack of emotional support as they grapple with existential questions about the meaning of life, fear of the progression of the disease, and their own mortality. They felt existential guilt where they regret previous choices in life. Experiences of identity and existential crisis also emerged, where dignity and self-image became central.
