Abstract [sv]

Resultat: Analysen resulterade i fyra kategorier.

Abstract [en]

Background: A family member who is at the end of life often wishes to die in their home. To make this possible, a relative needs to step into a new role as a family caregiver. Being a family caregiver means a great responsibility, impact on their mental and physical health and creates a changed life situation.

Aim: To investigate family caregivers' experiences of caring for a family member at home at the end of life.

Methods: A literature study based on eight qualitative studies. Database search was done in Cinahl and PubMed. The analysis was carried out according to Friberg's five-step model.

Results: The analysis resulted in four categories. The categories were: "Feeling responsible for medical treatment," "Receiving support is important," "Caring at home is complex," and "Changed roles in the family."

Conclusion: Family caregivers experience a lack of support in their care from the nursing staff.  To improve this, healthcare professionals should be responsive to their needs and see relatives as part of the care team. Further research is needed to gain a better understanding of family carers' experiences.
