Restoration principles at the Swedish Railway Museum 1930–1970 : A study of both shelved and executed restoration measures on the Rail-way Museum's oldest passenger carriages (English)
Abstract [sv]
Abstract [en]
The overall purpose of the thesis has been to investigate in which extent conservation and restoration measures have been carried out on the Railway Museum's oldest passenger cars, since the cars were transferred to the museum's collection. The carriages were made during the 1850s to 1870s, and collected for the museum during the first decades of the 20th century. Furthermore, the purpose is also to follow up on whether both planned and implemented measures follow the restoration principles of the time.
As a basis for the survey, archive and literature studies were carried out, and documents were searched for about a week in the Railway Museum's archives. Then, a comparative study was conducted, where information about performed measures was compared against historical photos and previous research, as well as against the restoration principles of the time. Furthermore, also case studies were carried out on three wagons, where both intended and completed restorations were examined in more detail.
The investigation showed that there have been relatively extensive plans about restoring the railway cars to original designs, but that these plans have not been fulfilled. However, at a number of the railway cars certain measures were taken during the mid-1950s, when the wagons were put into museum traffic. The survey also comfirmes that both intended and performed conservation and restoration measures followed the restoration principles of the time relatively well.
